Migraines are a type of headache that can be debilitating and affect your quality of life. Migraines are painful and are often accompanied by other symptoms, such as problems with vision and nausea. However, it's important to remember that not all migraines are not the same. For example, some migraines can severely impact vision, while others may only affect a specific part of our body. At Buchanan Health Center in Leesburg, our chiropractors can evaluate and identify various types of migraines and provide quality chiropractic care to help manage the severity and frequency of migraines. Here are common types of migraines we often treat.

Migraine with Aura

This is the most common type of migraine. Before head pain starts, a person sees minor hallucinations such as flashing lights or haloes about objects. This is called aura. When pain occurs, it's usually on one side of the head. The pain makes even normal amounts of light, sound, and sometimes smells or tastes too strong to be bearable. It's hard to stand, let alone do anything else. Nausea and vomiting can also occur.

Migraine Without Aura

This is the same as migraine with auras. Only the sufferer does not get a warning sign from the aura. Some people can experience both migraines with and without auras during their lives. Each migraine attack is different.

Brainstem Aura or Basilar Type Migraine

People with this type of migraine experience extreme auras. Patients also experience ringing in the ears, dizziness, or lack of coordination. Less than an hour later, head pain sets in, usually on one side of the head but can spread to both sides.

Chronic Migraine

This is a diagnosis given to someone who suffers any type of migraine for more than fourteen days in a month.

Familial Hemiplegic Migraines

These are severe migraines that run in families. Usually, a person sees auras and experiences numbness or sudden weakness on one side of the body. Some people have difficulty talking or suddenly get very drowsy. Permanent side effects include some loss of coordination or constant involuntary eye movements.
